A Glue/λ-DRT Treatment of Resumptive Pronouns

چکیده

Anaphora and resumption, phenomena which intuitively seem to challenge resource sensitivity, have been argued to support its role in Glue. The resource deletion treatment of resumption in LFG Glue presented by Asudeh (2004) was designed to work together with the Glue resource duplication treatment of anaphora (Dalrymple et al., 1999). However, as ‘resumptive pronouns’ are mere pronouns, the choice of a treatment of anaphora that has long been found to be inadequate creates an issue. A modular treatment of pronouns using LFG, Glue, and λ-DRT (Kokkonidis, 2005) is the most promising alternative. A treatment of resumption for this treatment of pronouns is presented together with new insights about resource management, the new and the old treatment of resumption, and the intuitions behind them.

Why Glue a Donkey to an F-structure When You Can Constrain and Bind It Instead

The semantic treatment of anaphora using λ-DRT with Glue which I present combines the strengths of both by assigning to each the task where it arguably fares best: Glue composes meanings and DRT deals with anaphoric resolution. Key to this approach is a simple first-order system for λ-DRT that allows LFG syntactic constraints to be transferred into the dynamic representation language. This para...

Acquisition of English Relative Clauses by Adult Persian Learners: Focus on Resumptive Pronouns

Tsimpli and Dimitrakopoulou (2007) observed that uninterpretable features are unavailable in second language (L2) acquisition after the critical period. In this paper, we verify this claim by providing evidence from Persian speaking learners of English as an L2 on the status of resumptive pronouns (RPs) as uniterpretable features. Unlike English which does not allow RPs, Persian shows various b...

and Competition

A Minimalist hypothesis about resumptive pronouns is that they should be no different from ordinary pronouns (McCloskey 2006). The paper substantiates this hypothesis with respect to a particular view of pronouns: pronouns are ‘elsewhere’ elements. Just as the interpretation of ordinary pronouns, on this view, is determined by competition with anaphors, the interpretation of resumptive pronouns...

Optimality Theory, markedness and second language syntax: the case of resumptive pronouns in relative clauses

Eckman, Fred R. 2004. Optimality Theory, markedness and second language syntax: the case of resumptive pronouns in relative clauses. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 10.1. 89–110. This paper proposes a constraint-based analysis for what is arguably the most interesting phenomenon in second language (L2) syntax, the occurrence of an L2 error pattern where the regularity cannot be e...
